Denise Whalen

We are saddened to announce the passing of Denise Whalen on February 8th. Denise was a founding member of Hocking Hills Liberty Camp for kids and camp director from 2015 to 2023. While in her final years, she experienced multiple health issues but maintained a great love for Liberty Camp and provided guidance. She will be sorely missed by all.

Denise Ann Whalen, aged 68 of Logan, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at The Pickering House in Lancaster, Ohio.

Born May 22, 1955, in Logan, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Willis Wayne and Margaret Ann “Margie” (Gillen) Denny.

Denise was a 1973 graduate of Logan High School and a 1976 graduate of Riverside Methodist School of Nursing. She worked as a nurse at Hocking Valley Community Hospital, GE, and Fairfield Medical Center before retiring from OhioHealth Berger Hospital. Denise has served as director of the Hocking Hills Liberty Camp since its inception in 2015. She was also part of the Central Committee of the Hocking County Republican Party, former president of the Hocking County Republican Women’s Club, and former president of the Logan City Council.

Denise is survived by her daughter, Allison Ann (Patrick) Kelley of Logan, Ohio; grandson, Grant Wayne Kelley; cousin, Dave (Julie) Frick of Lancaster, Ohio; and special friends, Jamie Riggs and Mary Kunkler-Prince.

A funeral service officiated by Pastor Tom Walz will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at the Roberts Funeral Home in Logan, Ohio. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Logan, Ohio.

Visitation will be held at the Roberts Funeral Home from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM on Monday, February 12, 2024.

In lieu of flowers, Denise’s family suggests that donations in her memory may be made to Hocking Hills Liberty Camp, c/o 705 East Second Street, Logan, Ohio 43138.
